was successful about a month ago, with
a trip to Bountiful, aka Templeton, Iowa.
We retired golfers need side events to
pass the lazy days. The short drive west
is about 77 miles, to the very small
town of Templeton, home of Templeton Rye.
What a history, dating back before
Prohibition and then to Al Capone and
beginning once again in 2000. It takes four
years to age and the end result is a
wonderful sipping whiskey. It will be perfect
down south, after happy hour, out on
the patio with the neighbors, chewing the
fat about the latest golf round, trip to
the beach or Mexico....Ahh.....the good stuff!

Early snow
in Ankeny, October 10,2009. The first
two photos show my first view of the
snow when I awoke this morning. The
poor Aviator, first ever snow, and the
last blooms of the Blue Hawaii plant
and yellow beauty. Take a rest on mom's
bench and then check out the burning
bush and a little dish of snow on the leaf
of the tulip tree. Today, the last day
to drive the B/W convertible...AFTER
the snow melts...Carry on.....

I am thinking it
is really getting time to head south. My
Cedar Falls friends called today, they are on the
road and will probably roll into Llano tomorrow
or early Sunday. Easy ride when you have two drivers.
Possible snow tomorrow and a hard freeze
is predicted, so I did yard work today.
I was hoping for a good day to put the plastic
on the outside of the lanai, today was perfect.
However, after more than four hours of work in the yard,
the bod aches.....I might have to drink some
brandy before I hit the sack, to ease/relax the
muscles....as far as the Nobel prize is
concerned. How can they give the award to BO?
Nominations were due on Jan 30, 10 days after he
took office. Just what did he do in those
10 days to deserve this honor? I am confused.
And what is the charity that he will donate
the money to? But as Senator McCain stated,
now he has to go to work and get the job done
and earn this honor.....Sunday is a foursome
golf event, but with temps are expected to be at 25....
sorry Charlie.....no way Jose....save the
money and use it for gas to get back
home in the Rio Grande Valley......I am
loving the baseball playoffs and the "drama"
of the Presidents Cup golf....another
event for the rich....which reminds me....
golf is back in the Olympics, so can we have
amateur golfers? Why do the pros get the shot
at this big event? I am all for getting
the Olympics back to amateur status....
Carry on......stay warm......

Butterflies on the run
If anyone can ID the brown butterfly,
thank you, let me know the name. I can
not find it in my book. These photos were
shot at the butterfly garden at Saylorville
Lake.

The New Sculpture garden
in downtown Des Moines is open to the public. The fence has been taken down and now we are free to roam the area and check out a 40 million dollar gift of art from the
Pappajohn family to the city of Des Moines, Iowa. The day started with a stop at
the Farmer's Market, sculptures, state Capitol and ended at the Iowa State Fair Grounds. Strange people are everywhere.......

The calendar
has turned the page The weather report has done the same thing. Fall is here and Mother Nature has dipped into the 40's with her overnight temps. I am feeling busy, two weeks until I pack the vehicle and head on down that blue highway. I am also thinking this
should be done sooner....I had to wear long pants while golfing on Saturday. When brother Jeff retired, he made a decision, no more long pants. His running tab was over
a few years until he broke down and put on the slacks. This means it is THE TIME, to move on down that blue highway where the weather still suits my clothes...polos,
bermudas, a visor while golfing, sitting on the patio cooling down for happy hour.....
carry on......

Time to Roll
down that BLUE highway. The furnace is
on, 40 degree temps expected tonight. I
am not covering any veggies or flowers.
I played a nice round of golf today, we
had at least 20 mph of wind......sounds
like Texas! I shot a nice 41, one penalty
no three putt greens. In the middle of
the fairway, it is hard to find your
golf ball. Way too many leaves that have
dropped from the trees. As ya'll know, if
ya'll pay attention to college football......
now the IOWA Hawkeyes are #13. a big jump
from about #32. All you have to do is beat
#5. The QB is starting slow, but our
defense is great. The Big 10 season is
tough, it is a great beginning......three
weeks from today, I will be in a motel room
someplace in Oklahoma. Most of the clothes are
chosen, I have a box of liquor to haul south,
I have one bag of books, recipe books, reading
books, computer books.......so much to
organize, so little time. Saturday a fun
golf outing at HONEY CREK, the Nellie Open.
18 holes of golf in Texas Scramble format.
followed by pig roast and prizes........
It will be a fun day....carry on my friends

August 19th,
I wrote about watching the rain in the morning.
Today a little heavier rain, which is
much needed. I hope it goes south to Texas.
I seem to remember Texas was in a drought when
my mom was living in Alamo. That is over 15 years
ago....seems like a long long drought. Of course,
as the saying goes, need rain? Just wash your car.
OR, water the flowers, which I did on Sunday..
Deeds need to be done and photos need to
be downloaded and updates need to be done for
security and i tunes....29 days until departure....
carry on.....

Math problem
Here's one that is fun. We don't know
who actually had enough time to figure
this out......way too much time on their
hands....
get a calculator, key in the first three
numbers of your phone number (not area code).
multiply by 80
add one
multiply by 250
add the last four numbers of your phone #
add the last four numbers of your phone # again
minus 250
divided by two......
What is the answer? Yes, it works.....OH MY!
